The GDPR promotes the privacy principles of data minimisation and privacy by design, acknowledging that privacy should not only be protected by law but also by technology.
The important role that privacy enhancing technologies can play for safeguarding personal data that are outsourced to the cloud in complementation to standard contractual clauses is also shown by the recent recommendation 01/2020 by the European Data Protection Board on measures that supplement transfer tools to ensure compliance with the GDPR.
This presentation first provides a short overview of privacy enhancing technologies and tools that can be used for and by individuals to minimise and protect their personal data. We then present three examples of available privacy enhancing tools for individuals and discuss challenges of implementing them that we have been researching.
- Using and configuring secret sharing for secure and privacy preserving cloud data storage
- Attribute-based credentials and how they were made practical in the IRMA project
- The importance of sender anonymity, and how Tor and especially Apple's Private Relay promise to bring mixing to the masses
Both presenters have been active representatives for IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Technical Committee (TC) 11 (Information Security & Privacy):
